Every fall we have a Mother’s Camp here in Arizona. It is a refuge from the world for one weekend, a chance to be uplifted in faith and to share our burdens. The discussions always flow freely and every year I marvel that I’m not alone. The same thoughts and doubts the devil brings are also shared by so many others and it’s ok to share these burdens. “I already have my after school snack at home,” I bragged to my brother as the school bus bounced down the dirt road toward our stop at the edge of the cornfield. I thought about how sweet the Brach’s caramel chews hidden in my dresser drawer would taste. The night before, on a trip to New Market grocery store with mom, I had put them in my jacket pocket as we walked down the candy aisle, and nobody noticed. What a score!

When I was five years old, I often stood by the cot for a long time and watched my little brother Veikko sleep. I understood that Veikko was different from the rest of us, but he was extremely dear to me. While asleep, he seemed so beautiful and fragile. It was easy to think that his guardian angel was standing by the cot. Five years later the presence of the guardian angel became reality for me. Last Christmas I heard a speaker brother say in his sermon that the door of the stable where Jesus was born is still open. That was like a powerful reminder that made me think of a service guest who had come from the other side of the world as an asylum seeker. Believing friends had asked him to come to services. He did not possess the grace of forgiveness yet, but services were a welcome break in his oppressively monotonous daily life. Lue lisää

The Phoenix winter services were held during the last weekend of February. The event has been gathering service guests annually for 37 years. The services surprise a first-time visitor. Blazing heat welcomes the guests who arrive from every direction. There are no signs of winter around. Spring has arrived, which can clearly be seen in the sprouting desert trees and bushes.
