Services are always a festive event

God’s Peace! So good to see you after such a long time! The entry hall of the Evangelic-Lutheran Church of Zürich in Switzerland is full of service guests and cheerful meetings.
Believers of Central Europe have assembled for services in Zürich, and greetings and personal news are exchanged in Finnish, French, English, and German.

Important social event

– ”It is wonderful to be at services and sing hymns and songs of Zion together or just listen to the others sing,” says Anne Michel, who has lived with her family in Switzerland and France for nearly 8 years.

– ”We always eagerly wait for services. This is an important social event for us, an opportunity to see other believers,” she continues.

Päivi Meier, who has lived in Switzerland for more than 20 years, is happy and grateful that God has allowed Central Europe to have this small congregation.

– ”It is great that we can listen to online services nowadays, but it is also important to have real services once in a while.”

Will young people grow as members of God’s kingdom?

Päivi Meier says she has been happy to meet new believers at services, and many of the believers living more permanently in Central Europe have become good friends.

She finds services important especially because they strengthen the personal faith of children and young people and help young believers become rooted in God’s kingdom.

– ”Services are always a festive occasion for us.”

Both Meier and Michel are very grateful that SRK sends speakers to keep services in Central Europe.

Guests from six countries

In Switzerland and France services with SRK’s mission speakers are arranged on three weekends every year.

In addition to the Zürich fall services, there are spring services in France and a weekend-long Christmas camp in some part of Switzerland.

This time there were about 50 service guests from Switzerland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Finland. There were families who have been living in Central Europe for a long time, people who have moved there for work, exchange students, and believers who happened to be visiting in Switzerland at that time.

Abraham left his homeland

Pekka Kinnunen spoke about Abraham, who left his homeland to travel toward an unknown destination. This Bible text reflected the life situation of the listeners, many of whom were living away from their home countries.

Kinnunen encouraged them to rely on God’s blessing in the same way as Abraham did.
The other speaker, Pentti Saulio, spoke about Joshua.

– ”Like Joshua, we should also be obedient when God calls us to take on a new task or to move to a new place.”

Saulio reminded the listeners that we can trust in God’s care every day.

The gospel gives us a hope for heaven

After the services Pekka Kinnunen gave a lecture about Martin Luther’s life and his work as a reformer of faith.

After the services the entry hall of the church was again full of people, both old friends and new acquaintances, saying goodbye and then leaving into different directions.

– ”Come over to see us! We will meet at the Christmas camp, if not sooner! God’s Peace!”
