Tammikuun viimeisenä tiistaina kokoontui Etelä-Suomen varttuneita Maitoisten leirikeskukseen.
Kaikkivaltiaan hoitoon on turvallista kuulua. Psalmissa sanotaan lohduttavasti: ”Hän antaa enkeleilleen käskyn varjella sinua, missä ikinä kuljet, ja he kantavat sinua käsillään, ettet loukkaa jalkaasi kiveen” (Ps. 91:12).
Kuulijat saivat kuulla Amerikan uskovaisten lempilaulun pianolla säestettynä. Sen sanat kuvasivat tämänkin leirin lämmintä tunnelmaa: Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above (vapaasti suomennettuna: Siunattu olkoon se side, joka yhdistää sydämiämme kristillisessä rakkaudessa; tämä yhdysside on verrattavissa siihen, mitä kerran taivaissa).
Luoja näkyy kaikkialla
Leiriläiset kuulivat myös Maria Joensuun kirjoittaman alustuksen ekspressiivisestä taideterapiasta Tapani Jokelan lukemana. Alustuksen pohjalta leiriläiset jakautuivat eri ryhmiin keskustelemaan taiteesta.
(SL 122:4.)
The Almighty Cares
God’s guidance, the gift of singing and art plus the joy of believing spoke volumes
On the last Tuesday of January, the senior believers from all of Southern Finland gathered at SRK’s Camp at Maintoinen. The camp’s foyer was filled with the chatter of some 145 elderly believers exchanged what’s new with them. It warmed my heart to see so many dear travel friends from many decades, both young and old alike.
Seppo Aho served as the camp director together with his wife Raija. Assisting them were Maikki and Tapani Jokela, Kaisu and Paavo Pelkonen plus Ritva Holma. After bidding everyone a warm welcome, Aho delivered an opening devotion using a text from 1 Kings, chapter 6, where it is written how there were silent builders constructing Salomon’s temple. Those builders were no different than we here assembled at camp, humble people obedient to that which the Lord has called us.
God Guides
During the discussions, there was much emphasis on God’s guidance when He created humans, created then in His image, to His liking and as His children. Yet each human being is unlike any other, just as unique as every single snowflake throughout time is microscopically different.
The best take from our camp was the gospel.
When we are in the precious care of the Almighty, we can travel carefree, it is utterly worthless to worry about anything. In the Book of Psalms it is written; ”For he shall give his angels charge over thee,
to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands,
lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Ps. 91:12). Even Salomon wrote, ”To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose…a time to build and tear down… a time to be born, and a time to die” Ecc 3:1).
The best take from our camp was the gospel. During the devotions and during the free time, this gospel echoed and was preached freely.
Songs portray feelings
The singing session was led by Ritva Holma and Maikki Jokela. Ritva, a professional cantor who lives in Nurmijärvi, told us about her favorite job working for the Vantaankoski state church. The campers were able to hear about the birth and composition of four of her newest songs of Zion (SL 315, 339, 137 and 311). Holma also told about the various changes that needed to be made to get them easier for thousands to sing and not just professionals singing solo. Camp participants sang some of these nice new songs.
Ritva also presented a song, with which she wrote for children to thank God for their dads — a father’s day song, SL 137. She said she is especially thankful for all of her precious escorts, and all their encouragement and constructive advice they give her even about music.
– Everything we do, we can do for the benefit of Zion, thanking God and for the glory of His name.
This time there were so many camp participants that they could not enjoy their meals at the same time. While others went to dine, half of us stayed in the main assembly to talk more about songs, their words, and melodies, since we had a professional with us. We were able to even listen to a very favorite tune from America, played on a piano called, Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. (here are the unofficial lyrics in Finnish: Siunattu olkoon se side, joka yhdistää sydämiämme kristillisessä rakkaudessa; tämä yhdysside on verrattavissa siihen, mitä kerran taivaissa).
The Creator is visible all around us
The camp participants were even able to listen to Maria Joensuu’s written presentation about expressive art therapy, that Tapani Jokela read to us. Based on this introduction, we all formed several different groups to discuss art from varying perspectives.
Based on the outcome of the group discussions, we acknowledged that the Creator’s art is all around us, we are surrounded by His magnificent works -- in each ane every sunrise and sunset. One of the participants was a professional landscaper, who related that using the Creators plants and flora, we can even create living artwork.
Joy remained in our hearts
Tapio Tölli served us during the final devotion, using a text from Peter’s first epistle, its beginning chapter. This final message for these camp participants could not even been worded any better this this; ”Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls!” (1. Peter 1:8–9.)
The final song got left echoing in my mind all the way home: “Among us, dear Lord Jesus, / Your fire of love ignite / that hearts would all be kindled / to shine the gospel’s light; / and blow throughout all Zion, / O Spirit of the Lord, / that hearts would praise the Father / in love, in one accord!” (SZ 195:4.)
